Today I met with Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of Britain, and Josef Stalin, the ruler of the Soviet Union. For this meeting we met in Yalta in the Soviet Union. Churchill and I were greatly welcomed by Stalin and we began to celebrate the unofficial defeat of Germany (Chronicle. 584). We have gathered to discuss the fate of the postwar worlds and Germany (Danzer et al 585).
Since Germany devastated the Soviet Union, Stalin wanted to take a harsh approach against Germany. He wanted to keep the country divided into occupation zones that would be controlled by the allied military forces (Danzer et al 585). Because of the Soviet’s military victories of the past few months, it gave Stalin a distinct advantage to carve up the postwar worlds (Chronicle 584). Stalin argued that by keeping Germany divided, the country would never again threaten the Soviet Union (Danzer et al 585). He would take control of Berlin and control the eastern half of Germany upon its surrender (“The Yalta Conference” 1).
I am eager to conclude the American military operation in Europe. I would like to remove my troops from Europe and direct my forces to Japan. Churchill and Stalin feel that the military is of secondary importance. They are intent on dividing up the new Europe into zones (Chronicle 584). I see where they are coming from and do not want to interfere too much.
I see that Stalin is dealing with this situation from a strong position. And even though I cannot stand the Communist system, I like and trust Josef Stalin (Chronicle 584). I believe that he wants “to ensure the security of his country. I think that if I am able to give him everything I can without demanding anything in return, he will not attempt to annex anything and will work to build a peaceful and democratic world” (Chronicle 584).
So far, we have agreed that Germany will be temporarily divided into four zones. One for each of the Big Three, America, Britain and the Soviet Union, and to fourth zone for France. Churchill disliked this idea, but I convinced him to reconsider (Danzer et al 586).
Tomorrow we will meet again to discuss more and finalize all of the decisions we are making. I hope everything ends well and soon. If not, this war will be even more devastating.
